History:- BKN REGIONAL MILK UNION

Bolangir-kalahandi-Nuapada District Milk Union had started functioning during the 1981, 1978 and 1978 and 1996 respectively. All these Milk Union Were Managed by Department of AH & VS., Odisha. Subsequently the Government had decided to hand over these Milk Unions to OMFED during the year 2003-2004. The management of Bolangir Dist. Milk Union was taken over by OMFED 2004. Similarly the Kalahandi and Nuapada District Milk Unions were taken over by OMFED during Jan-Feb 2004. The growth of the Milk Unions had taken encouraging trend after the management was taken over by OMFED. Since then, the Development of these Milk Unions has been steady till date.

 

In order to have effective administrative control and better management, these three Milk Unions were merged to form BKN Regional Milk Union during November’ 2005 and this regional Milk Union started functioning in full swing from 01.04.2006.

 

     The basic objective is to carryout activities conducive to socio-economic development of the milk producers by organizing village Dairy Cooperative Societies in the above three Districts. The sole aim is to procure surplus milk through the co-operative societies in reasonable and remunerative price and to provide marketing facilities through out the year.

 

After OMFED has taken over, the dairy development activities  was strengthened in more organized manner. The Procurement and input activities was streamlined to restore confidence of the farmer to pour milk in societies and to enhance their financial status by scientific management of dairy animals. The farmers were paid milk cost in ten days intervals. They are provided with good quality cattle feed, Mineral Mixture, first aid medicines on subsidized cost at their door steps. Mass deworming and mass vaccination programme are being undertaken for the farmers in almost free of cost or at a very marginal price 57 nos of A.I. Centres have been opened in convenient locations of the milk union to cater the demand to create cross breed animals to enhance the quantity of Milk. A number of animal health camps are being organized at a regular interval to cure infertility sterility problems. The farmers, society personnal are being imparted different training on society management, dairy animal management. CMP,AH&FD, A.I. at different training on centres of OMFED under IDDP-VI project, RLTAP,RKVY& TWDP project. The farmers of different societies are being sent on exposure visit to the progressive Milk Unions of inside and out side the state to acquire updated knowledge and advanced information on dairy development

 

 

The Milk Union has installed Bulk Milk Coolers for chilling facility to combat spoiling and curdling of milk and to reduce the transportation cost. This has also helped the distant farmers to pour milk in the societies conveniently. Till date 30 nos. of Bulk Milk Coolers has been installed and chilling facility of 75,000 LPD has already been achived.

      

           Bolangir Kalahandi nand Nuapada are mostly tribal area and major portion of these districts are water scarcity and drought affected area. Alarge section of population are backward and poverty stricken. This has been a major set back for Dairy development. 27 no. of Blocks have been covered out of 32 nos. of Blocks in three Districts. A large number of farmers are pouring Milk in the 243 no of societies. Still there is a long way to go. The future aim is to intensify in all the Blocks of operation area of the Milk Union, besides coverage of potential in left over Blocks and  to bring more number of milk producers to Co-operative fold by creating village Milk Co-operative society.

 

              As regards of Dairy Development progress the following steps has been taken in Bolangir district. The procurement was only 600 LPD during the year 2003-2004 and the total milk solid was 11.2%, which has gone highest 31353 LPD in a day during the year 2017-2018 and the total milk solid is 12.3%. Out of 14 nos. blocks of the district 13 nos. of blocks have been covered. The Union has organized 132 DCS covering 532 villages and 7063 nos. of member producers have been enrolled. The milk cost payment to the producers is Rs. 58.3 Lakh in 10days interval, which gives full faith to dairy farmer and regular income source from the allied agriculture activities. As regards to the infrastructure development the Milk Union has installed BMC of 51000 LPD for chilling facilities to combat with the spoilage of milk scattered in 18 nos. of remote places, 35 nos. of A.I. centers opened to cater to the demand to create the C.B. progeny to enhance the quantity of milk. This infrastructure has been created by the whole hearted Co-operation of the District administration.

 

            As regards of Dairy Development progress the following steps has been taken in Kalahandi district. The procurement was only 1000 LPD during the year 2003-2004 and the total milk solid was 11.6%, which has gone highest 15998 LPD in a day during the year 2017-2018 and the total milk solid is 12.3%. Out of 13 nos. blocks of the district 11 nos. of blocks have been covered. The Union has organized 73 DCS covering 308 villages and 4215 nos. of member producers have been enrolled. The milk cost payment to the producers is Rs. 31.53  Lakh in 10days interval, which gives full faith to dairy farmer and regular income source from the allied agriculture activities. As regards to the infrastructure development the Milk Union has installed BMC of 20000 LPD for chilling facilities to combat with the spoilage of milk scattered in 9 nos. of remote places, 22 nos. of A.I. centers opened to cater to the demand to create the C.B. progeny to enhance the quantity of milk. This infrastructure has been created by the whole hearted Co-operation of the District administration.

 

            As regards of Dairy Development progress the following steps has been taken in Nuapada District. The procurement was only 400 LPD during the year 2003-2004 and the total milk solid was 11.2%, which has gone up to 1242 LPD in a day during the year 2017-2018 and the total milk solid is 12.2%. Out of 5 nos. blocks of the district 3 nos. of blocks have been covered. The Union has organized 16 DCS covering 52 villages and 207 nos. of member producers have been enrolled. The milk cost payment to the producers is Rs. 2.385  Lakh in 10 days interval, which gives full faith to dairy farmer and regular income source from the allied agriculture activities. As regards to the infrastructure development the Milk Union has installed BMC of 4000 LPD for chilling facilities to combat with the spoilage of milk scattered in 3 nos. of remote places. This infrastructure has been created by the whole hearted Co-operation of the District administration.

 

     The benefit to the member producers besides the milk cost cattle feed and mineral Mixture has supplied through out the year. The first Aid Medicines, De- working medicines and vaccine are given either on subsidized rate or on free of cost.

          The  future aim is to intensify in all the blocks in the operational area of BKN Union, besides coverage of potentials left and to bring the more number of milk producers to co operative fold by creating village Milk Co-operative Societies.

 

          We are implemented the Tribal Women Dairy Project in Lanjigarh & Thuamul Rampur  Blocks.In this project 30 no od DCS and 2 nos. of 2 KL BMC to be installed at Harekrushna pur. We have organized 11 nos. of TWDCS heaving 165 women member at Lanjigarh Block. More over 900 women milk producer will be benefited under this project. The beneficiary will get benefits like subsidized cattle feed, Mineral Mixture, different kinf of medicines health coverage of animals, insurance of animals and their owner, etc.  So many infrastructure work like installation of BMC and Construction of BMC building, Society building and establishment of electrical sub-station, will be done under this project. We have organized 10 nos. of TWDCS heaving 165 member at Lanjigarh Block.

 

         We are implementing Village Based Milk Procurement System under NDP-1. Inthis project 30 no of DCS  to be organized in the leftover Blocks of Milk Union. More over 900 Milk producer will be benefited under this project. We have already organized 18 nos. of MPCS under this project.
